Your ear was never broken.
It was never switched on.

Music Like Never Before. An ear-first system by Allen Masih.

The promise

You were never the problem. The order was.

You were maybe eight. Maybe twelve.

There was a cousin at a wedding, or a boy in school assembly, or an uncle at Christmas who picked up a guitar like it was nothing and just played. The room went quiet. Then the whole room sang.

And you stood at the edge of it, clapping slightly late, thinking one thing. I want that.

So you tried. A few lessons. A teacher, a book full of dots, scales you did not enjoy for reasons nobody explained. Somewhere around month four you noticed the others were getting somewhere and you were not. And you drew the only conclusion available to you.

Some people have it. I do not.

Then life happened. Exams. A degree. A job you are actually quite good at. Rent, deadlines, a calendar that fills itself. Music became something you listen to in the car, loudly, alone.

But here is the part nobody sees.

Every time someone sits down at a piano at a party, something in you leans towards it. Every time a stranger sings in a station, you slow down. Every time a song you loved at sixteen comes on, your chest does that thing. And for a second you are back at that wedding, at the edge of the circle, still wanting it.

You never stopped wanting it. You just stopped believing you were allowed.

I know that feeling from the inside. At nineteen I could name every chord in a key, rank them, tell you which one was diminished and why. Then I would pick up a guitar and have no idea when to play any of them. My friends, who knew half the theory, just played. I was sure they had something I did not.

They did not. They were learning in a different order. They listened, copied, got it wrong in front of people and adjusted. I had the manual. They were in the pool.

You were never the problem. The order was.

Music Like Never Before puts the order right. Ears first. Then hands. Then the page, if you want it. The way every musician who “just gets it” actually learned, finally written down.

This is not about learning a song. Anyone can teach you a song.

Did You Know?

Around one in six adults believe they are tone-deaf. The actual clinical condition, congenital amusia, affects roughly four percent of people. Researchers have a name for everyone else: “false amusics”, perfectly musical people who were never trained in the right order. And this year, a UK survey found that one in three British adults wishes they had never given up music. In London, it is closer to one in two.

This is about walking back to the edge of that circle, and this time, stepping in.

The journey

Six levels, one ear.

Most music lessons hand you an instrument and a page of dots on day one, then wonder why you quit by Easter.

We do it the other way round. Music is a staircase, not a ladder. Each step stands on the one below it, and each one switches on a part of your ear you have been carrying around unused.

0 MusicalityYou already have it

A song plays in a shop while you are deciding about onions. And for the first time, you notice the bass sitting just behind the beat. You feel faintly ridiculous. That is Level Zero working. No instrument, no theory. Just the quiet discovery that the prediction engine every musician uses has been running inside you since before you could speak.

1 TimeFinding the floor

At a wedding, the dhol starts and four hundred people who have never met all stamp on the same beat. Nobody counted. Level 1 is that floor, the invisible pulse a whole room agrees on. You stop counting and start feeling.

2 RhythmWhat you build on the floor

Two people play the exact same notes. One sounds like a ringtone. The other sounds like Sunday morning. Level 2 is about that difference: placement, groove, feel. And how to be the second person.

3 PitchThe other dimension

You can still hum a song you have not heard since school. You do not know the notes, but you know the shape. Level 3 turns that shape into something your voice and hands can follow. This is usually the level where people who called themselves tone-deaf stop saying it.

4 ScalesThe colour palette

Why does one song feel like sunshine and another like rain? Why does a raga sound like evening? Scales are not exercises. They are the palette every song is painted from. Level 4 is where all the theory you ever collected finally clicks into place, because now you can hear it.

5 HarmonyWhere notes stand together

You know the moment in a song when the backing vocals come in. Nothing else changes, and suddenly the song is enormous. Level 5 is that moment, understood. By now you are not memorising music. You hear a song, recognise where it is going, and go there with it.

Six steps. Every one of them something your ear can already half do. We just finish the job.

The Harmony Code

Letters are addresses. Numbers are jobs.

Nashville. The late 1950s. A recording studio, three in the afternoon.

The band is booked for three hours, and every minute costs money. The guitarist has his chart. The pianist has hers. The backing singers are warmed up. Everyone is ready.

The singer walks in, clears his throat, sings two lines, and says the sentence every session musician dreads.

“Can we try it a bit lower?”

Silence. Somewhere, a pencil snaps.

Because “a bit lower” means every chord on every chart is now wrong. G becomes E. C becomes A. Every musician in the room starts rewriting, muttering, crossing things out, while the clock eats the budget.

And then one of the backing singers, a man named Neal Matthews, did something so simple it is almost annoying. He stopped writing the names of chords. He started writing their numbers.

Not G, C, D. Just 1, 4, 5.

Now the singer could ask for any key he liked. Nobody rewrote anything. 1 was still 1. The song was still the song. Only the starting point moved.

Sessions got faster. Nashville got famous for players who could hear a song once and play it in any key. And the rest of the world kept handing beginners shopping lists of letters.

Chord 5 does the same job in every key, in every song, in every country. Learn what 5 feels like once and you have learned it everywhere, at the same time.

That is the uff moment. The moment you realise you were never meant to memorise ten thousand songs. You were meant to learn seven jobs.

The Harmony Code is four volumes and more than 1,400 pages built entirely around this idea. Once you hear songs this way, you cannot unhear it. A Bollywood ballad, a gospel hymn and a pop hit turn out to be cousins, telling the same story in different clothes.

Meet the families

Think about the train home for Diwali.

Every song you have ever loved is a journey between three places. Once you can feel which one you are standing in, you can hear where a song is going before it gets there.

Home 1, 3, 6

Your mother’s kitchen. The smell of the lights. Nothing is expected of you. You can sit down. Songs rest here.

Movement 2, 4

You are on the train. You have left, you have not arrived, and nothing is wrong. There are snacks. Going somewhere with no drama attached.

Tension 5, 7

The train stops twenty minutes outside your city. No announcement. No reason. Your station is right there. Your whole body is leaning forward, waiting.

Home, movement, tension, home. It is the shape of almost every song you have ever loved.

Three ways in

Remember the circle at the wedding?

There are three ways to step into it. One for the person ready to stop hiding. One for the person who wants the whole map, right now. And one for thirty people who want to be there at the very beginning.

UNMUTE

Stop being the one who “can’t sing.”

The bonuses

Each one is the answer to a moment where you would have quit.

When I sat down to build this, I wrote out every reason a person gives up on music. Every single one. The night you miss practice and feel too guilty to come back. The child who fights you at the keyboard. The day you finally play something and nobody is there to hear it.

Then I built something for each one. These are not extras.

ORIGIN 30

Why there are only thirty.

California, 1976. A garage that smells of solder and cold coffee.

Imagine you are one of the first people ever to touch an Apple computer. Not in a shop. In the garage. And the person who designed it pulls up a chair, sits beside you, and walks you through it himself. Why this key is here. What he was thinking when he built it. Where it is all going.

A few years later, millions of people own one. None of them get that afternoon.

Or go further back. Every great gharana began with one teacher and a handful of shishyas, sitting on the same floor, learning directly from the person who shaped the sound. Generations later, thousands of musicians trace their music back to that room. But only those first few were ever in it.

Here is what happens to every great idea. It starts in one room, with one person. Then it spreads. Someone learns it from the founder and teaches it to a friend. That friend teaches a class. The class teaches their children. And somewhere along the way, it becomes a recipe card.

There is your grandmother’s dal, written on a card in someone else’s handwriting. And there is your grandmother, standing in the kitchen, telling you to wait, not yet, listen to it, now. Same recipe. Completely different dal.

This system is going to grow. In a few years you will hear about it from people who learned it, from teachers I have trained, from students passing it to their own students. They will be good. I will make sure of that.

But they will be telling you what they were told. I will be telling you what happened to me.

Thirty is what I can teach well. Thirty people is already around 180 hours of my life, before a single voice note. I cannot teach thirty-one people the way I want to teach thirty.

And ORIGIN never reopens. When the thirtieth box is claimed, ORIGIN closes. Not paused. Not coming back soon. Closed. Future students will get a beautiful system. They will not get this.

In February 2027, this goes out to the world

And it becomes a recipe card. A very good one. But right now, for thirty people, the grandmother is still standing in the kitchen.

One day, someone will ask how you learned music. The only question is whether one of the thirty is you.

Ten days

I am not going to offer you someday.

There is a word that has quietly cost you more music than any teacher ever did. Someday.

Someday is very polite. It never argues with you. It simply sits beside you at every wedding, every party, every song in the car, nodding along. It will wait with you for fifteen years. It will wait with you for fifty. And it will never, not once, ask you to begin.

16–25 November 2026

ORIGIN opens on Monday 16 November and closes at midnight UK time on Wednesday 25 November. Ten days. Long enough to take your Ear Scan, book a call with me, and talk it over with the people you love. Short enough that someday does not get a vote.

Before Christmas

Every founder who joins before the doors close has their box in their hands before Christmas. After midnight on 25 November, there is no box under any tree. There is no box at all.

1 December 2026

All thirty of us begin together. Same morning. Same first page. Every founder sits with me for their kickoff, and every founder has their first-week session with me.

4 January 2027

On 21 December the whole batch pauses, together. Nobody falls behind over Christmas, because nobody is running. On 4 January, thirty people come back to the same page, refreshed and hungry.

Is this the year someday finally runs out?

My promise to you

I measure the end of my job by your ears.

Every family has a tailor they swear by. Not the one with the big shop and the neon sign. The small one, three streets away, with a measuring tape round his neck.

You go to him for a wedding kurta, he hands it over, you try it on, and the shoulder sits slightly wrong. Most shops would shrug. It is stitched. It is paid for. Next customer.

He does not shrug. He frowns, takes out his chalk, and says, come back tomorrow. And the next day, if it is still not right, he says it again. He does not stop because the order is finished. He stops when it fits.

UNTIL · ORIGIN 30 only. At THE PLAYBACK, you should be able to choose a song from THE VAULT, listen to it, and play its chords through from start to finish by ear.

If you have done your part, and you are not there yet, I do not hand you a certificate and wish you well. I keep going. Another 30 days of IN YOUR EAR and two more 1:1 sessions with me, free. And if that is still not enough, we go again.

THE EAR PROMISE · Every tier · 30 days

By the end of Level Zero you should be able to do five things: find the pulse in a song, feel whether it sits ahead of the beat or behind it, follow the shape of a melody, hear whether a song is bright or dark, and feel a song leave home and come back.

Complete the Ten Listening Moments, finish THE 7-DAY SPARK, and take your EAR SCAN again at the end. If, within 30 days, you genuinely cannot hear those five things, tell me, and I will refund you.

For UNMUTE and BACKSTAGE, that is your full payment back. For ORIGIN, it is everything you paid minus the cost of your box and the sessions we have already had together. And the box stays with you. It has your name on it. It was always yours.

Not because the calendar says we are finished. Because your ears do.
